Work is underway on two new projects to review skills standards in animal care and management, covering areas relating to pet care, animal training, exhibited animals and marine wildlife.
For details of timelines, scope and opportunities to get involved, follow the links to the individual project pages below.
Exhibited Animal Care & Marine Wildlife Project
Zoo keepers, animal carers and marine wildlife responders play a vital role in supporting the health, welfare and sustainability of some of our most vulnerable animals and marine wildlife.
Those working in zoos need skills in animal enrichment and conditioning to support the mental and physical health of animals. Marine wildlife responders need the ability to work in challenging conditions and to comply with animal welfare regulations. In both situations, specialist skills are needed to maintain a safe environment for both the animals and humans involved.
Industry has indicated the need to review and develop skills standards in these areas to reflect changes in work practices, shifts in legislation and developments in technology.
Pet Care & Animal Training Project
As Australians recognise the importance of their pets and the great things they contribute to our lives, the pet care and animal training industry is expanding. This is causing demand for skilled workers in fields such as pet grooming, companion animals, animal regulation and animal studies.
Industry is driving this project to update current skills standards in these areas, so that they match current job practices and skill needs.
