High demand for Australian wines is driving large-scale wineries to become increasingly sophisticated, implementing increased automation and relying on temporary and casual workers to assist operations during harvest and vintage.
To capture the advanced skills needed to coordinate wine operation in these increasingly complex systems, industry has driven the development of eight new units of competency. The new units will support the training, coordination and leadership skills needed to keep up with high production levels and increasing automation.
The final draft units will soon be submitted to the Australian Industry and Skills Council for endorsement, before being made available for use.
“The wine industry is constantly evolving and it still relies on some old world techniques blended with the newest technologies. With these new technologies come new challenges and requirements for staff understanding and competencies. These revised qualification is a start to enhance the skills and knowledge of our workforce and therefore in the Australian wine industry overall.”
