The technology and skills for harvesting milk in Australia are expanding, with the introduction of new robotic technology and automatic milking systems. At the same time, traditional methods are still valued and used in a range of settings.
Draft skills standards are now available for feedback. They have been revised to reflect the vast array of technologies used and broader range of skills needed in the dairy and milk harvesting industry. Along with a qualification and 11 units which have been reviewed, two skill sets have been developed to address the specific skills needed to work with milking equipment. This includes skills for dairy workers to perform maintenance of milking equipment and for milking equipment technicians who travel to worksites to maintain the machinery used to milk livestock.
