Pulp and Paper Qualifications and Skills Standards Updated & Published

Many job roles across the pulp and paper sector are changing as industry draws on the latest in science and technology to develop more sustainable processes.

Consultation with industry took place throughout this project to revise and update all qualifications, skill sets and units of competency within the PPM Pulp & Paper Manufacturing Industry Training Package.  Thanks to the input of everyone involved in this project, updated national qualifications and skills standards have been revised to reflect current technology, terminology and processes.

The final draft qualifications, skill sets, and units of competency were approved for endorsement by the Australian Industry and Skills Committee and State and Territory Ministers and have been published on the national register (training.gov.au).

The Certificate II, III and IV level qualifications have been merged, so that there is one at each level reflecting core skills in work health and safety, quality assurance and problem solving, as well as offering elective units in other specialist and general areas.

Units have also been updated and developed to incorporate emerging technologies associated with bio-processing, recovered paper and de-inking. Some have been merged to reduce duplication.

Eight skills sets have also been revised to reflect updates to the units and three skill sets have been developed to capture skills for induction into the industry, management and leadership roles, and de-inking operations.
