It’s a question we are hear a lot, but maybe the real question is – why are they important? Or, why should I be interested in training packages?
Industry plays a vital role in the process of updating training packages and to benchmark the skills standards for their job roles. This way the qualifications can be reviewed to match the current needs and expectations of the workforce.
The advantage of training packages is that they offer a national and industry-led approach to training and assessment. Many years ago each state had its own qualifications, but with national training packages workers can access qualifications that are recognised across Australia.
Training packages are the documents developed by industry and used by registered training organisations, like TAFEs, to help design their training programs. Training packages are industry’s way of telling trainers what skills and knowledge students need to perform particular job roles and to what standard.
Vocational education is designed to make people ready for work, so it puts an emphasis on competency-based assessment.
Skills Impact have developed a handy infographic to explain what a training package is. You’re welcome to share this widely. The more people that understand training packages, the more we can do to improve them – for industry and the vocational training sector as a whole.
